FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about commercial millwork, cabinetry, casework, countertops, project timelines, and working with Pio Custom Cabinetry.
General
What types of commercial projects do you specialize in?
Pio Custom Cabinetry is a commercial millwork and casework fabricator serving the Chicagoland area. We build institutional and commercial interiors — reception desks, casework, architectural paneling, countertops, and fixtures — for healthcare, corporate office, education, retail and hospitality, auto dealership, government, and dispensary projects. Most of our work comes in as general-contractor-awarded millwork packages built to the architect's drawings.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in Bensenville, IL and supply the greater Chicagoland area — DuPage, Cook, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. We also take on projects nationwide when the scope calls for it, fabricating in our shop and crating the work in installation sequence for delivery and on-site install.
Do you work with architects and general contractors?
Yes. General contractors, architects, designers, and building owners are who we work with every day, and most projects reach us as GC-awarded bid packages. We fabricate to the approved drawings and specifications and coordinate closely through submittals, shop drawings, and installation.
Do you provide design assistance?
We're a fabrication, coordination, and installation partner, so we build to your architect's or designer's design intent rather than replacing it. That said, our team regularly contributes shop-drawing engineering, material and finish recommendations, and value-engineering input to keep a package buildable, on budget, and on schedule.
Services
What is commercial casework?
Commercial casework is the durable, standardized cabinetry that outfits commercial and institutional spaces — base and upper cabinets, storage units, nurse stations, break rooms, and lab or classroom casework. It's engineered for heavy daily use and built to commercial standards rather than residential ones. We fabricate casework in-house on our CNC equipment for consistent, repeatable quality across a project.
What is architectural millwork?
Architectural millwork is the custom, often feature-grade woodwork designed specifically for a space — wall paneling, feature walls, wood ceilings, custom reception features, and detailed trim. Unlike stock casework, it's built to the architect's exact details and finish schedule. We fabricate architectural millwork to AWI Custom Grade standards.
Do you build custom reception desks?
Yes. Reception desks and workstations are one of our core products, from single-station front desks to large multi-level transaction counters. We fabricate them with the substrate, solid-surface or laminate tops, and integrated details the design calls for, and our own crews install them on site.
Do you fabricate commercial countertops?
Yes. We fabricate solid surface, plastic laminate, and stone- or quartz-integrated tops in-house, sized and fit to the casework they sit on. Fabricating tops and casework under one roof keeps tolerances tight and the finished install clean.
Can you match existing cabinetry?
In most cases, yes. When a project involves an addition, expansion, or repair, we work from samples, field measurements, and finish references to match existing casework as closely as materials and finishes allow. We'll flag up front where an exact match isn't achievable so there are no surprises at install.
Materials & Quality
What materials do you use?
We fabricate with plastic laminate, solid surface, wood veneer, solid wood, quartz and stone tops, glass, metal accents, PVC edgebanding, and commercial-grade hardware. Material selection follows the project's finish schedule and specifications. If a spec calls for a particular manufacturer or product line, we build to it.
Are your products commercial grade?
Yes. Everything we build is engineered for commercial and institutional use — heavier substrates, commercial hardware, and construction detailing rated for high-traffic environments. Commercial grade is our baseline, not an upgrade.
What finishes are available?
Finish options include high-pressure plastic laminate, thermally fused laminate, wood veneer with stained or clear finishes, solid surface, and painted finishes, along with a full range of edge treatments. We match the finish schedule on your drawings and can provide samples for approval before fabrication.
Do you fabricate to AWI standards?
Yes. Our casework and architectural millwork are built to AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute) Custom Grade standards. When a specification calls out a specific AWI grade or requirement, we fabricate and document to it.
Project Process
How do I request a quote?
Send us your project drawings and millwork scope through our Request a Quote page, or contact our estimating team directly. Partial information is fine to start — share what you have and we'll follow up on anything else we need to price it accurately.
What information do you need to prepare an estimate?
The most helpful items are the architectural drawings, millwork details and sections, finish schedules, specifications, any addenda, bid forms, project location, and schedule. The more complete the bid set, the tighter and more competitive the estimate. If you're still early, we can work from preliminary drawings and refine as the design develops.
How long does a project typically take?
Lead times depend on scope, material availability, and the approval cycle for shop drawings and submittals, but a typical commercial package runs several weeks from approved drawings to delivery. We give you a fabrication and installation schedule up front and build to it. Field-verified dimensions and prompt submittal approvals keep the timeline on track.
Do you provide shop drawings?
Yes. We produce coordinated millwork shop drawings and submittals from the architectural drawings, specifications, and field conditions for your review and approval before anything is cut. Nothing goes into fabrication until the drawings are signed off.
Do you provide installation?
Yes. Our own crews handle delivery, installation, scribing, and punch-list support — the work is set by the people who built it, not handed to a separate installer. We coordinate our installation with the GC's schedule and site conditions.
Industries
Do you work in healthcare?
Yes. Healthcare is one of our most active markets — exam-room casework, nurse stations, reception and check-in desks, lab casework, and solid-surface tops built for cleanability and durability. We work around the coordination and infection-control requirements that healthcare interiors demand.
Do you build for schools and universities?
Yes. We fabricate casework and millwork for K–12 schools, colleges, and universities — classroom and lab casework, library and administrative millwork, reception areas, and durable finishes chosen to hold up to institutional use and tight summer construction windows.
Do you work with retail and hospitality projects?
Yes. Retail and hospitality work includes display fixtures, service counters, back bars, host stands, booths and banquettes, and feature millwork where finish quality is front and center. We build to the designer's intent and the durability the environment requires.
Can you handle large commercial developments?
Yes. In-house CNC machining and finishing let us keep repeatable casework and rollout programs consistent across large or multi-location developments. We crate work in installation sequence and coordinate phased deliveries so millwork arrives when each area is ready.
Scheduling & Pricing
How much does commercial millwork cost?
Cost depends entirely on scope, materials, finishes, quantities, and site conditions, so every project is priced from its drawings and specifications rather than a flat rate. Send us your bid set and we'll return a clear, itemized, competitive quote. We're also glad to offer value-engineering options where they can bring a package into budget without compromising the design.
When should we contact you?
The earlier the better. Bringing us in during bidding — or even preconstruction — lets us flag long-lead materials, coordination issues, and value-engineering opportunities before they affect the schedule or budget. That said, we're set up to turn around competitive bids on standard timelines when a package is ready to price.
Can projects be phased?
Yes. We routinely fabricate and deliver in phases to match a construction schedule, crating and sequencing millwork so each area is served as it becomes ready for install. Phasing is planned up front with the GC so deliveries line up with site progress.
Do you perform after-hours installations?
Yes, when a project requires it. Occupied healthcare, retail, and corporate spaces often need after-hours, weekend, or off-peak installation, and our crews schedule around building access and operations to minimize disruption. We coordinate the details with the GC and facility ahead of time.
