Choosing the Right Commercial Countertop Material

Solid surface, quartz, granite, or lab-grade? The right top depends on the room, the wear, and the code. A quick guide for specifiers.

Quartz and solid-surface commercial countertops

Countertops take more abuse than almost anything else in a commercial interior, so the material is part of the spec — not an afterthought. Here’s how the common options compare for commercial work.

Solid surface

Seamless, non-porous, and renewable — scratches can be sanded out. Because seams disappear and sinks can be integrated, it’s the default for healthcare and other hygiene-critical environments, and it holds up well in high-traffic reception and break areas.

Quartz

Engineered stone with consistent color and excellent resistance to stains, scratches, and heat. A strong choice where you want stone aesthetics with predictable performance and low maintenance.

Granite

Natural stone, prized for durability and a one-of-a-kind appearance. Each slab is unique, which is a feature for showcase surfaces and a coordination point for large runs.

Lab-grade

Purpose-built, high-resistance surfaces for laboratories and scientific environments — engineered to stand up to chemicals and intensive use. Common in education and healthcare lab casework.

The fabrication advantage

Because we build the casework and the tops in the same shop, seams, overhangs, and integrated sinks line up the way the drawing shows — no finger-pointing between the cabinet vendor and the top vendor.
