Commercial Reception Desks: What to Get Right Before Fabrication
A reception desk is the first thing a visitor sees and a workstation a team uses all day. Here are the details that make or break one — from ADA transaction heights to how the seams land.
A reception desk does two jobs at once: it’s the room’s centerpiece and it’s a workstation someone sits at for eight hours. Get the sculptural part right and miss the functional part and you have a desk that photographs well and frustrates the people who use it. The details below are the ones worth resolving before anything goes to the shop.
Two transaction heights, not one
Most commercial reception desks need a working height for staff and a transaction ledge for visitors — and at least one accessible section at ADA height with the required knee clearance. Where that accessible portion lands, and how it blends into the rest of the desk, is a detail best settled on the shop drawing rather than discovered in the field.
How the visitor and the work flow
Sightlines, queuing, and where a guest sets down a clipboard all shape the front of the desk. Behind it, the staff side needs cable management, power and data grommets, room for monitors and a printer, and storage that’s reachable from a seated position. A clean front means nothing if the back can’t do the job.

Materials that survive daily use
The transaction surface takes the most abuse, so it’s usually solid surface or quartz — seamless, cleanable, and repairable in the case of solid surface. Fronts can carry the brand with wood veneer, back-painted glass, metal reveals, or a slat feature, but the working surfaces have to be built for wear first.
Curves and seams
Curved and faceted fronts are what make a reception desk feel custom — and they’re where fabrication gets tight. Radii have to be drawn to something the shop can actually build, and on a long solid-surface top the seam locations should be planned so they fall where they’re least visible. That’s a coordination conversation, not a field decision.
Coordinate it as one piece
The strongest reception desks are detailed as a single package — desk, transaction top, paneling, and any feature wall behind it — so grain, finish, and reveals carry through instead of meeting at an awkward joint. We fabricate and install all of it together, coordinated to the approved drawings and the finished field conditions.
